July 31, 2014 Albemarle County Schools are looking toward the future thanks to a grant from the Secretary of Education and Virginia STEM. Rep. Steve Landes and Superintendent Pam Moran were joined by students and Monticello High School officials Thursday morning to celebrate the $20,000 grant. The fund will help educators develop a curriculum model that will best prepare the students for the future. With so many new jobs in technology and engineering, Rep. Landes says there needs to be a focus on those fields so students are more prepared when they enter the job market or even plan for high education. "With science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or the STEM related subjects, that's the wave of the future. We have to make sure the high schools are really putting people in place to do that whether it's in higher ed or going out and working," Landes said. Creating schools for the future will center around the "STEM" program, and how to better incorporate areas of interest like graphic design, and nano technology into the classroom. Moran says part of the plan is to shift the focus away from standardized testing. She would also like to see state of the art centers for science and technology created in high school throughout the county.
