Wow! Like a lot of you, I wasn't too optimistic for about 2/3 of today's game, but the Cardiac Cavs do it again! Fitting that it was the team's two best hitters that delivered the first two RBI's. And how about Keith Werman coming through on the big stage once again? He's been struggling all season long but was 2-4 with an RBI today. Something about playing in Omaha must really get him going because he played very well here back in 2009. And Jared King coming through with that RBI triple for some insurance is a great story too. After all that guy has been through with the death of his parents, you have to be extremely happy for him.
Sure, Danny Hultzen wasn't quite as sharp as we would have expected, but the bottom line is that he pitched for more than 2/3 of the game and did not allow a run. He walked three batters today, but he grinded it out and kept his team in the game. He also threw 113 pitches! The kid is a workhorse and today he showed everyone why he's a finalist for the Howser Trophy (college baseball player of the year).
I liked O'Connor's move bringing Tyler Wilson to pitch out of the bullpen. He's been solid all year long and stepped up when his team needed him. He also only threw 39 pitches, so it's not like he's going to be completely tired out. Besides, with the kind of pitching depth the Cavs have, Oak could afford to put Wilson out there today. I'd expect Will Roberts to start the game Tuesday, but we'll probably find that out at practice tomorrow. Cody Winiarski will also be fresh on Tuesday if needed.
This sets up an interesting matchup between Virginia and defending champion South Carolina (7pm Tuesday on ESPN). Should be a good one!
