News At Noon?

Why you may...or may not see the news at noon today.

Good morning,

I've written the stories, will soon put on a tie and the editors have inserted all the video.  We're ready to go for the news at noon on CBS19 but you may not get the chance to see it.

President Obama just began a White House news conference that's likely to run deep into the noon hour.  CBS will carry live coverage of it until it's over.  And if it ends after 12:30, we'll go straight to CBS programming, a game show, I think.

So the way this works is that I sit on the anchor desk (Bo is off) for the full half hour and wait for the last question and the wrap-up at the news conference.  It's a fair amount of work for us to put together a newscast...but this work will likely dissolve into the ether.  So it goes...

I've always had a warm spot in my news guy heart for the noon news.  I used to walk home from elementary school to have lunch at home.  Yes, kids actually used to do that.  My mom would have the CBS Radio News on and we'd listen to Lowell Thomas and other deep-voiced CBS anchors describe the situation in Viet Nam or the Nixon-Humphrey presidential race.  Then it was back to school, smarter and with a belly full of tuna salad.

If you're watching the Obama news conference, now you know what I'm doing.  Sitting, waiting...and probably a bit hungry for a tuna sammich.
