Hot on the Hanger: Ankle Boots

For what's "Hot on the Hanger" look down at your feet! Here are some guidelines to wearing a popular shoe style that's lining the shelves at local stores: Ankle Boots!

I just bought an awesome new pair of ankle boots. I see pictures of celebrities sporting the style in all of the fashion magazines. But how can I make that translate into every day wear without looking like I'm trying too hard? Ankle booties are adorable and can be chic or fierce to compliment any style. But, as it is with everything trendy, you've got to keep a few things in mind to successfully pull off the look.

  • Choose a style that flatters your body type. Ankle booties look great shown off with a pair of skinny jeans or leggings. If you are going for a classic look that will elongate your legs, then dark jeans or leggings with dark booties are the way to go. The similar colors on your legs and feet give the illusion of a long leg line.

Choosing booties that are a shade close to your skin tone will also elongate your legs.

  • On the same note, if you're of shorter stature, be careful pairing ankle boots with a skirt, or with drastically different colored leggings. Doing so will break up your body's line and make you look shorter and possibly wider... something none of us want! The skirt and dark booties look is tough to pull off unless you're super thin and leggy.

These dark ankle boots paired with the longer dress make her legs look shorter and stockier than they actually are.

  • Don't be afraid to combine a flirty feminine dress with bold ankle boots. The contrast is very chic as long as the dress is fairly simple.

                                                                     Flirty and Fierce!

  • Usually opened-toe shoes and stockings is a HUGE no-no, but with peep-toe ankle boots, it's all good. Patterned leggings provide a pretty pop.

These tips are just my observations and suggestions, not the be-all-end-all fashion law. At the end of the day, if you feel like a rock star and like what you see when you look in the mirror, then tackle this trend with whatever flair fits you!

Here are the brown booties by New Directions I snagged for only $30 at Belk. I plan on wearing them with some skinny jeans and my UVA fleece when I emcee the next home Men's Basketball game in a couple of weeks. I think they'll add some style to the sporty outfit without being too overboard. What are your thoughts?
