Finding adult Halloween costumes can be tricky. Of course there are "sexy" versions of just about everything out there; but that's borderline-inappropriate for anyone past college.
You could spend a lot of money on an elaborate full-coverage costume if you've got the budget or patience for that.
You could go the witty-funny route like this "handstand man". Or if all else fails, be a ghost.
But what if you're a 20-something girl like me and you just want to look cute? The key is to work with what you've got.
A couple of years ago, I teamed up with a couple of the ladies from the Newsplex to dress up as the "Three Blind Mice".
What we already had: Black pants, black shirt, sunglasses and black eyeliner to draw a nose and whiskers.
What we had to buy: Less than ten dollars for the mouse ears and a tail.
This year I decided to be "Minnie Mouse". I already had a red polka dot dress, black tights, and black peep-toe pumps. I re-used my mouse ears from the "Three Blind Mice" costume. I went to the Dollar General and found white knit gloves and drew cartoon lines on them with a marker and used a Christmas decoration for the bow on top of my head.
For less than $5 I had a cute, comfortable costume and decided to enter the costume contest at Baha Bean. To my surprise, I actually won! Since I walked away with a $25 gift certificate to the restaurant, I actually made a profit with my costume!
Guys can get creative too. One of our editors discovered that if he grew out his mustache and styled his hair a little differently, he could pass for the Simpson's character, "Ned Flanders". He found a cheap green sweater and pink collared shirt and entered the contest too, coming in an impressive 3rd place!
You don't have to spend a lot of money or settle for the stereotypical sexy costumes. Take a look inside your closet, get creative and have a safe, happy Halloween!
