Something that I did in Girl Scouts when I was younger was hand-make gingerbread tree ornaments. They look and smell like real gingerbread but aren't edible and can be used year after year! I love pulling out the gingerbread ornaments because the scent immediately gives the whole room a warm Christmas feel. You can shape them however you like and even draw messages or add glitter pizazz. They're a great way to make the ones you love know that you're thinking about them every holiday season for years to come!

All you need is:

6 tbsp shortening

1 cup sugar

1 cup molasses

2 tsp baking soda

2 tsp ground cloves

2 tsp ginger

2 tsp cinnamon

7 cups of flour

1 1/2 cups water

Mix it up, refrigerate overnight, knead and roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch thick, cut the shape you want, use a straw to make a hole in the top (so it can be used as an ornament), bake for 20 minutes at 350 degrees, let them harden and paint or decorate them to fit your gift-giving needs!

Other ideas:

-Instead of a book, how about a book on tape for a loved one who's job has them on the road a lot?

-For a lady-friend that deserves some pampering, buy nail polish in the color of her favorite outfit and a mud mask packet for her face. Then, give her a manicure while she enjoys her facial...all the while, have her favorite dinner baking in the oven.

- For the fellas, buy a 6-pack of his favorite beer, and get the specialized beer-tasting glass that fits the style of his top-ranked brew. His favorite meal in the oven is also applicable... everybody likes to eat!

If he's a handyman, find out what his current project is and do some digging on what simple tools could make it easier. It's amazing how helpful something as cheap and basic as a magnetic wand and dish can be!

This tray is just $2.50 at ACE... budget-friendly... plus it shows you pay attention to his hobbies!
