Twitter saves teeth!!
This past weekend, I was eating breakfast with a few of my college girlfriends who had come into town to visit. I bit into an "everything" bagel and crunched down on something hard. "A poppy seed", I thought. But no... I crunched again, pulled the object out of my mouth, and realized it was a piece of my tooth. "Uh oh". I scanned my teeth with my tongue to figure out where the shard had come from and, just my luck, it was a front tooth.
I have bonding on four of my front teeth and they've chipped before. In the past, I've super-glued the chip back into place until I could see my dentist, Dr. Vakay in Arlington, who has been fixing me up since back in my pageant days. I went to the hardware store, got some super glue and parked myself in front of the bathroom mirror for the delicate procedure. Just as I'm lining up the piece to my tooth to make sure it fits just right, I dropped it in the sink. FAN-tastic! As it clinked down the drain, I examined my smile in the mirror and thought about what a spaz I would look like anchoring the news with a chipped front tooth that Monday.
I decided to tweet about my debacle so people would know what to expect when they turned on their TVs. I could never have predicted what would happen next: As I sat at the UVA men's lacrosse game, in my friend's coffee-stained sweatshirt (I spilled it all over myself) my phone was going off with Twitter notifications. Marijean Jaggers (@marijean) and Tricia (@traugottscville from www.cvilleuncorked.com) had re tweeted my tooth chip to the dentists at @cvilledentistry asking if anyone could help... and the wheels were in motion!
One thing lead to another and by the time I had been sleeted on and left the game, I was on the phone with Dr. Viglione who said he could be at his offices in 15 minutes to fix me up! Even though it was Saturday and they were closed, Dr. Viglione and his daughter opened up shop and had me taken care of in no time! They said they watched me on the news and there was no way they'd let me go on air looking like I had just chewed on rocks.
I am beyond grateful!
It's amazing that one little tweet could cause a chain reaction ending with a fixed smile and a happy Tara! Some people say that social media is getting in the way of person to person interaction, but I made plenty of new, real-life friends that Saturday and have a stellar smile to prove it!
