Myself, Dan Schutte and plenty of others will be tackling the "Tough Mudder" at Wintergreen this October... It's Iron Man meets Burning Man in a 10 mile obstacle course full of teamwork and camaraderie and it's raised over $1 Million for the Wounded Warrior Project. I'll be documenting our training.
On the Tough Mudder website it states: "Tough Mudder is 3-4 times longer and MUCH TOUGHER than a typical mud run such as Warrior Dash. On average, only 78% of participants finish a Tough Mudder event. Only those in strong physical condition should enter."
I'm not totally out of shape... but I'm by no means in peak physical condition. I have until October to get my train on and I better start now!
I've been to boot camp, but this is nothing like the three mile mud-covered obstacle course I did with my flight at Ellsworth Air Force Base. The Tough Mudder courses are designed by British Special Forces to test all around strength, stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie. Forget finish times. Simply completing a Tough Mudder is a badge of honor.
The Tough Mudder isn't really a race. In the course, teams of people work together to help each other battle the hills, mud, ropes and fire to finish.
So, back to getting my train on... The Tough Mudder website provides a training guide with specific exercises geared towards the course. The work-out is described as "a high-intensity circuit designed to torch everything from your chest and legs to your abs and arms, sending your fitness to an elite Tough Mudder level. You’ll sculpt a rugged, gritty, and classically athletic body that’s built Mudder Tough".
Starting today, I'm determined to get Mudder Tough!!! I'll keep you all posted on my progress.
