The Big 60!

Today makes the 60th day this year that we've hit 90 degrees, as this record setting summer marches along.

It's finally marks the 60th day that we've hit 90 degrees or hotter this year at McCormick Observatory. This year will already go down as the hottest climatological summer on record (June, July, and August), but now more records may be in jeopardy. Here's how the latest blistering numbers break down as of today's date.

90 degrees or hotter – 60 days (record – 64 days)

95 degrees or hotter – 28 days (record – 34 days)

100 degrees or hotter – 7 days (record – 16 days)

The way things look now, the record for days above 100 degrees will stay safe. It also looks like our record for days above 95 degrees is safe. The record for 90 degree days could certainly fall before the season is finished, especially considering in past years, we've hit 90 degrees well into the month of October. It should also be noted since 1895, only seven years have featured 60 more days of 90 degree warmth (now including this year). Wednesday's forecast also calls for a high of 90 degrees, which will inch us even closer to the record.

Now that we've seen both extremes this year (snowiest winter and hottest summer ever), which would you prefer? Weigh in on this issue and some of your answers may make the airwaves!

Stay cool,
