Last week I wrote a blog about how we tied the record for the number of 90 degree days in one calendar year. I also mentioned that if we were to see one more day of 90 degree weather that we would break through that record. That day came on Sunday, when the mercury soared to 90 degrees at McCormick Observatory. This marked the 65th day of 90 degree temperatures this year and eclipsed the old record of 64 days set in 1925 and 1930.
Fall is only two days away as of this writing, but the heat shows no signs of letting up. In fact, our forecast calls for at least three more days of 90 degree temperatures. Ironically, this next heat wave just happens to coincide with the official start of autumn. If you're wondering how late in the season we can go into the 90s, back in 1938, we had a high of 90 degrees on October 17! That's the latest occurrence of 90 degree heat on record here in Charlottesville. Hopefully that record will stay in tact! Until then, keeping thinking those cool thoughts...
