October Full Moon

Full Moon on Sunday, October 4th at 6:10 A.M.

With plenty of clear skies this weekend, you probably notice the bright moon lighting up the night sky. Technically the full moon occurred Sunday morning at 6:11 A.M. The October full moon is nicknamed the Harvest Moon or the Hunter's Moon.

The Harvest Moon occurs closest to the Autumnal Equinox (start of fall). In two years out of three, the Harvest Moon comes in September, but in some years it occurs in October.

At the peak of harvest, farmers can work late into the night by the light of this Moon. Usually the full Moon rises an average of 50 minutes later each night, but for the few nights around the Harvest Moon, the moon seems to rise at nearly the same time each night: just 25 to 30 minutes later across the U.S.

If you see a good shot of the Full Moon, snap a picture and email it to us weather@newsplex.com. We may even put it on air!
