Over the past week or so, the weather here in central Virginia hasn't been too exciting and while that's great for outdoor activities, it's interesting how the weather systems work. Last Thursday, a cold front moved through the Rockies. This front cooled temperatures in that region off by 30 degrees and even brought some snow to the higher elevations. That same system moved through our area late Friday and all we saw were maybe four raindrops in total and our temperatures actually warmed behind the front. It's just so interesting to me how things change so quickly. A similar situation happened just last night. A cold front moved through the Plains states on Sunday dumping, in some cases, feet of snow, while our region, last night, didn't even see any wet pavements. So could this be things to come during this month? Could we be talking about a drought once again in our area? We won't get ahead of ourselves. I mean, the next front may dump buckets of rain on our area. Let's just be thankful it's not a foot of snow. It's just so interesting this time of year, how the weather systems roll.
As we progress through the fall season, the jets are shifting. The polar Jet will be sinking further south, allowing for some of that cold air to move into the U.S.. The tropical Jet will stay further south, keeping folks in South Florida tanning at the beaches, while we play the "to wear a jacket or not to wear a jacket game." All in all, it's nothing out of the ordinary, it's just so amazing to me how quickly the seasons change. Now, before I go into a rendition of "These are the days of our lives", I'll mention that this is the time of year, where we can get highs in the 80s, even 90s and then highs only in the 40s. Our first frost can happen in late October and I think it was last year during October when snow flurries began falling.
Now my favorite time of the year in central Virginia is the fall season. It's just so beautiful. I can't wait to see all the colors. With all the rain we received this summer. The colors should be vibrant and not turn that yucky brown color too quickly. Go out and enjoy this time of the year. Plenty of festivals to attend. As a Meteorologist I want rain to keep our water supply healthy, but as a real person on my days off...I'd rather have the sunny days so I can enjoy Fall in central Virginia.
