Smoke's Source

What is the source of all the smoke in Charlottesville?

If you were out and about on Thursday and saw and smelled smoke in the air in Charlottesville, you weren't alone. No need to worry, as this was a controlled burn by the Department of Forestry. The fire was in southern Albemarle County near Plank Road. We had a light southerly wind on Thursday afternoon and this was able to bring some of the smoke from the southern part of the county, all the way into the Charlottesville area.

This also serves as a good reminder that when we have dry, breezy weather, fires can spread quickly so always be careful when you're doing any outdoor burning -- especially in fall. Of course in the evening, with smoke and haze lingering in the air, we can get some fantastic sunsets as the sunlight gets scattered out by the particles in the air.
