Snow Surprises

When you think of the snowiest cities in the United States, Charlottesville usually wouldn't come to mind...Until this year.

There's no doubt that the winter season we've seen this year has been historic, in many ways. Crippling snowstorms have fallen one right after another from December through February. We've broken several records this year, including most snow ever in one season.

I thought it would be interesting to compare our seasonal snowfall total (as of February 18) to other "typically" snowy cities in the United States. Here's how the numbers broke down:

Charlottesville, VA: 56.5"

Albany, NY: 27.7"

Providence, RI: 30.3"

Lansing, MI: 31.6"

Boston, MA: 35.4"

Green Bay, WI: 36.1"

Minneapolis, MN: 40.6"

Anchorage, AK: 44.4"

Bismarck, ND: 45.2"

Chicago, IL: 45.4"

That's right, we've seen more snow than Anchorage, Alaska! In general the mid-Atlantic states have seen some of the snowiest conditions in the entire country so far this year. Especially northern Virginia, DC, and Maryland, where some places have seen 70"+ of snow. It's a winter that will long be remembered for those of us who have been shoveling overtime for the past few weeks and months. Aside from the shoveling, skiers and snowboarders have been loving every minute of this, as business has been booming for many ski resorts. For the rest of us, spring begins in about one month!
