April Showers?

We are quickly picking up a big rainfall deficit for the month of April as the dry weather continues.

April is a month that many of us associate with rain. Gardeners and farmers count on those famous "April showers" to grace their gardens with precious drops of moisture. This supplies us with beautiful flowers, plants, produce, and other crops later in the season. Unfortunately, Mother Nature has missed the memo this April and showers have been noticeably absent from the forecast. Here's how our current rainfall numbers stack up for the month of April.

Through April 12, we have only received a measly 0.03" of rainfall at McCormick Observatory in Charlottesville. The normal amount of rainfall through that date would have been 1.36" giving us a monthly rainfall shortage (so far) of 1.33". The newest U.S. Drought Monitor product just released on Thursday now has all of central Virginia in "abnormally dry" conditions. That's the stage before drought is officially declared. This means if we don't get rain - and soon - we may have to start talking about the dreaded D-word in the near future.

How's the forecast looking from a rain standpoint? Unfortunately, we don't have any substantial rain in the outlook for the next seven days. We may have a system bring us the chance for showers toward the middle of next week, but those are the only raindrops making an appearance in our Weather Authority forecast as of now.

Until next time,

Brantley
