Summer Solstice

Tuesday marks the beginning of summer for the Northern Hemisphere. Right on schedule, the heat and humidity will make a return!

It's the time of year that some folks look forward to all year long and others dread - summer officially arrives on Tuesday! To be quite specific, summer rolls in at 1:16 p.m., Eastern Daylight Time. At that exact moment, the sun will be directly overhead at the Tropic of Cancer which is situated at latitude 23.5ºN. This is as far north as the sun ever gets and on Wednesday, it will begin its journey back to the south. This means that Tuesday has the longest amount of daylight in the Northern Hemisphere, with the days becoming slightly shorter each day that follows. Of course, all of this is reversed in the Southern Hemisphere which will be going into winter, while we are basking in the warm, summer sun.

After a cool Monday, the forecast will really begin to heat up for the next few days. Our highs should generally top out in the lower 90s on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Some relief will follow by the weekend, when we fall back into the 80s (close to average). Typically our hottest summer weather occurs from mid-July through early August, the "dog days of summer." In fact the hottest temperature on record in Charlottesville occurred on July 19, 1930 when we reached a mind-boggling 107º. Believe it or not, there was one other date in Charlottesville when the mercury hit 107º. The month? September!

Stay cool,

Brantley
