The Melons of Summer

Wednesday is National Watermelon Day and this blog is dedicated to some of our favorite summertime treats!

Some of my fondest childhood memories involve watermelons. My Dad used to drive a produce truck when I was growing up and every now and then I had the rare treat of getting to accompany him on his route during the summer months. This involved a wake-up call at 3:30 in the morning to make the hour-long trip to Winston-Salem, North Carolina. I didn't care, because I knew there would be a special treat waiting for me at the end.

After we had picked up produce at the main market, it was then time to make a special trip to the "Watermelon Man," which is where my Dad would pick up a massive haul of watermelons to be sold. Usually this part of the trip was right around daybreak. As the sun was coming up, he would take one watermelon and crack it open in the parking lot. We would start enjoying the nice, cool watermelon on those warm summer mornings. All of the pieces were shaped irregularly due to the rather crude nature of how we harvested the sweet, juicy fruit - but I didn't care. Even to this day, watermelons still bring back those fond memories from my childhood and they're still just as refreshing to me.

This blog was triggered by Wednesday being "National Watermelon Day." Of course, not everybody enjoys a watermelon - if this is the case, what is your favorite refreshing summer treat? Leave your answer as a comment at the bottom of the blog!

Happy Watermelon Day,
