For those who like the heat, you've had more than your fair share over the past few weeks! For those who don't like it, there's finally a brief reprieve!
Since July 20, every single afternoon temperature has been 90º or hotter. Many of those days have brought temperatures in the upper 90s and a few even had readings in the triple digits! On July 22, the mercury soared to a record-setting 101º and with the oppressive humidity, it felt like 120º in some parts of central Virginia. The long duration of warm weather was the result of a huge ridge of high pressure centered across the southern Plains states. Every few days, a chunk of that extreme heat would migrate eastward and give our temperatures another boost.
As of Friday, that pattern has finally changed up a bit. We have more of an onshore flow, keeping our skies cloudy. With the limited amounts of sunshine, highs were only able to achieve the mid 80s in most areas. Of course, with the humidity factored in, it ended up feeling more like 90º - but that's not the point. The fact remains that Friday broke our streak of 90º days that had been in place since for 16 days. It's a streak many will be glad to see broken!
How about you? Did you mind the heat? How did you cope?
Happy weekend,
Brantley
