We need rain. Badly.
Even though our yearly rainfall deficit is small, the overall picture of our water table isn't good. For the year our rainfall deficit is 1.40" below normal, and while that may not seem like a large number the lack of snow this past winter and rain have led to the dry conditions. Then again, your nose and sinuses have probably told you how dry it's been long before anyone threw some numbers at you. The dry conditions have allowed for very high tree pollen levels over the last few days.
The combination of gusty winds, very dry air, and very low fuel moisture has prompted a red flag warning for all of central Virginia today. While outdoor burning is illegal before 4pm, outdoor burning is DISCOURAGED altogether given that fires may spread very quickly due to the extremely dry conditions. For those of you who smoke, please also be careful where you dispose of your cigarette butts. It won't take much to get a fire started and spread quickly!
Overall, our forecast for the next seven days will be dry. A few isolated showers are possible today as a weak cold front moves across the area, but you can leave the umbrellas in the closet from Tuesday through the coming weekend. Temperatures will be cool through Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, but we'll return to the 70s and flirt with the 80s by Sunday.
Have a great week!
3, 2, 1, fade out.
