First things first.
We've got a nice Friday ahead of us! Dense fog this morning will give way to sunshine through the afternoon as high pressure scoots across the area. Look for temperatures in the upper 50s; that's about five to ten degrees above our seasonal normals.
Now, the real reason you are likely reading this blog.
Our next storm system taking shape in western Texas will move northeastward through the Carolinas this coming weekend. I expect rain to start Saturday after sunset and continue as rain overnight into Sunday morning. As rain falls on Sunday, temperatures too will fall. The rain will mix with snow showers in the afternoon, then change over to all snow showers by sunset. Snow showers are expected to end before midnight.
Accumulations of several inches of snow cannot be ruled out by late Sunday night, but exactly how much snow we'll see remains a big question. How much cold air will the storm pull in? When will the rain change over to snow? These are questions affecting snowfall amounts that cannot be answered with confidence right now. Even a change in the storm track could affect what happens in central Virginia. A lot of uncertainty exists with this storm system. I suggest if you have travel plans that bring you back into the area Sunday afternoon, pay attention to the forecast. You can do that either through our webpage, our Facebook page, our Twitter account, or on our iPhone/iPad/Android applications. We will be keeping all of our outlets updated through the weekend with the latest.
3, 2, 1, fade out.
