On Mondays we salute our Classroom of the Week. This week we're highlighting the first grade class at Jackson-Via Elementary in Charlottesville.
Jennifer Shafer and Bonnie Yoder teach the group. They've been guiding the kids on a problem solving project in which the class worked on ways to eliminate trash from the playground.
Here is what Ms. Yoder had to say about her students:
"I'm the Talent Development teacher who works with Mrs. Shafer's class. Recently we did a problem solving project. The class decided they were going to solve the problem of all the trash on the playground. First they picked up trash during their recess! Then they decided it would be much better if our playground had trashcans.
"They wrote letters to Lance Stewart (Facilities Maintenance Manager) telling him their problem and how they wanted to solve it. They worked VERY hard, writing letters, picking out the trashcans and thinking about the best way to solve this problem.
"Because of this class, Jackson-Via will be getting 3 new trashcans for our playground!"
