Classroom of the Week: Mrs. Besecker's 3rd Graders

October 17, 2011

On Mondays we salute our Classroom of the Week. This week we're highlighting Rachel Besecker's 3rd graders at Central Elementary School in Fluvanna County.

Students have been learning about diversity. The class worked to create a quilt to display their differences and similarities as part of an American Government lesson.

Here's what Mrs. Besecker had to say about her students:

"We have been completing a unit on American government. Recently we discussed the ideas behind America’s diversity and how even though we are all very different we are united under our rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

"The class worked to create a patchwork quilt to display our differences and similarities. In the photo each child is holding up the piece of the quilt that they made to represent them and their family.

"The quilt pieces had pictures of flags from the ancestor’s home countries, pictures of food they liked to eat, family traditions, and more. What a great way to show the fact that America is made up of many different people, but we are all united!"
