On Mondays we salute our Classroom of the Week. This week we're highlighting Liz Savage's 2nd and 3rd graders at Free Union Country School, a private school serving preschool through grade 5 in Charlottesville.
Over the past two weeks, Mrs. Savage and her students have taken on The Water Challenge, giving up drinks other than water to save money. Everything they save will be donated to the National Water Project to help others get clean water.
Here's what Mrs. Savage had to say about her students:
"As the 2nd and 3rd graders were nearing the end of our water cycle unit, they started to wonder why some people don’t have clean water and asked how we could help. This began our participation in a Water Challenge through The Water Project.
"Over the last two weeks students have taken on the challenge to give up drinks other than water to save money, which they then donated. Our school's donation will help drill a well at a school in Africa that has no clean water access.
"The 2nd and 3rd graders invited the rest of the school to join in the effort and worked hard each day to count the coins that came in and add up the daily total. Some students even brought in their birthday money, allowance, or change from their piggy banks. The two week challenge is up and we not only met our goal of $500, but doubled it and donated $1,000!
"I’ve been so impressed with the students’ hard work as well as their generosity and excitement in helping others. Our school will now get to track the progress of the well project we helped fund, and see the school and children we gave clean water to."
