On Mondays we salute our Classroom of the Week. This week we're highlighting Carolena Saunders' 5th grade class at the Tandem Friends School.
The students are doing more than their fair share to keep many people in Central Virginia warm this winter by collecting unused or unwanted coats, hats, scarves, etc.
Here's what Ms. Saunders had to say about her students:
"Tandem's 5th grade class took on a community service project and collected warm coats, jackets, hats, scarves and gloves for the needy and the homeless.
Working through a program at Plow and Hearth in Madison, the students collected enough warm clothing to fill the back of a pickup truck, already delivered to Plow and Hearth, and they are still collecting. The donated items will be given to Madison County Social Services for distribution to families and individuals in need.
The 5th graders made announcements in morning meetings, through the newsletter, and to community members and were delighted with the results. Service is a huge component of Quaker education, and these 5th graders really took it to heart."
