VNB Community Counts: The Miller School

January 29, 2010

Community Counts gives you a chance to help you learn more about the people and the organizations that have a positive impact on our community. This week we feature The Miller School and the Albemarle Housing Improvement Program.

Russell Jin, a senior student at Miller, joined CBS19's Bo Sykes to talk more about the school's community service initiative and the AHIP program.

In off campus community settings, every other Wednesday, student groups work with various community organizations and agencies and non-profits. AHIP is one of central Virginia’s oldest, most effective and most respected non-profit housing organizations. Since 1976, AHIP has worked to ensure safe and decent housing for Charlottesville’s low-income neighbors, assisting more than 3,500 people with housing rehabilitations, emergency repairs, support services and affordable rental units.

Next Wednesday, February 3, Russell Jin and 11 other Miller classmates will work with AHIP to perform volunteer repairs at private residences in Charlottesville, including homes of handicapped citizens who need wheelchair ramps to exit and enter their homes.
