Community Counts gives you a chance to help you learn more about the people and the organizations that have a positive impact on our community. This week we feature the Central Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Beverly Bean, Director of Public Support for the Central Va. Chapter of the American Red Cross, joined CBS19's Bo Sykes to talk more about the chapter and their relief efforts at home and abroad.
The Haitian Red Cross is leading the Red Cross teams. They have built trust within Haiti over many, many years. They visit communities in advance to alert people that Red Cross aid is coming, and they give out vouchers, then the Red Cross returns and hands out supplies. This is the largest, single-country relief operation in global Red Cross history.
The Central Va. Chapter of the American Red Cross is also responding to local disasters every week. They helped shelter 315 people during the Holiday Punch, opened shelters during the flooding rain, and stand prepared to work with community partners again this weekend if needed.
