VNB Community Counts: March of Dimes March for Babies

April 1, 2011

Community Counts gives you a chance to learn more about the people and the organizations that have a positive impact on our community. This week we feature the Orange County March of Dimes March for Babies.

This year's ambassador for the event, Brittany Richardson, joined CBS19's Bo Sykes to talk more about the event, which is a 5-mile walk at Orange County High School in an effort to raise money to save newborn babies.

"I had twin boys at 34 weeks. My first one was perfectly fine, but my second one fought for his life for a one whole week and it's awful to go down NICU every night to check on them before you go back upstairs. So March of Dimes is everything to me. People have premature babies, babies with birth defects, and once their child is fine they forget about everything. But me, never, because if it wasn't for the March of Dimes, my babies may not have been here," said Richardson.

The march is on Saturday, April 30. Registration begins at 8am and the walk at 9am. Organizers hope to raise $30,000 this year. All money raised goes to the University of Virginia Children's Hospital.
