We're happy to announce the winner of our Battlefield Hero essay contest.

CBS19 asked viewers to write in and tell us about a heroic idea--something they could do with $1,000 to help our community.

The three finalists waited anxiously for the results at Battlefield Ford on Pantops Thursday morning.

Barbara Lowery with the Belmont Baptist Church was presented with the check for her winning idea. She says the money will allow her church to give hundreds of flower arrangements to the elderly in nursing homes and assisted living facilities in the community.

Four of the finalists are also qualified for a chance to win a car.

We invite your comments on this story and the contest.

I search essay contests every day! LOVE them... fyi I found one where you can win a home in Hawaii and they are also giving back $30,000 to their community/their schools. Check it out: www.winhawaiianhome.com
