A special blood drive took place Monday to carry out the work and mission of Pam Melampy.
The longtime Deputy Clerk for the Albemarle County Circuit Court died suddenly last week from a brain aneurysm. Prior to her death, she planned the blood drive in memory of her nephew, David Shipp, who died a year ago in an automobile accident.
Melampy's daughter, Danielle Gibson, says the event is a way to honor them both while also giving back to the community.
"We really want people to realize that tragedy happens, and you just have to overcome a lot of it and make sure you move forward. Giving blood does help save lives, so we want to put that out there and help save the lives of other people," she said.
Gibson recently won the 2011 Car Max Cares Community Service award for the mid-Atlantic region. In receiving the award, she was able to donate $5,000 to the central Virginia chapter of the American Red Cross.
