Curling Season Kicks Off at Main Street Arena

To a lot of people, it's the sport with the brooms they see every four years during the Winter Olympics.
But at the Main Street Arena in Charlottesville, curling is starting to get pretty competitive. Monday was opening night for the fourth season of the arena's curling league.
There are currently 20 teams -- and more than 75 players -- in the league. That's up from six teams during the league's inaugural season, in the fall of 2010.
William Van Der Linde is the general manager of the Main Street Arena, and the league's organizer. He says participants travel as far as 1 1/2 hours each way to play.
There are some experienced players, but Van Der Linde says most of the league's members are new to the sport.
"They've all seen it on the Olympics," he said. "They want to give it a try. They're a little embarrassed at first that they're giving it a try. And then they try once and they're hooked."
Van Der Linde says there's still space for four more teams in the league's current season, and that the arena is considering starting a second daytime league for retirees.
