Fundraiser for Wintergreen Adaptive Sports Program

April 24, 2013

Imagine life without the use of your legs. Your simple daily routine
not so simple since you are unable to walk or feel from your waist down. Meet Savanna Stout, she was born with Spina bifida. Savanna has never known life without her wheels. Except when it comes to the slopes and water. She's been skiing since she was six. Kayaking for more than five years. The opportunity to participate has opened many doors for her.

It was her brother's passion for the snow and a Christmas gift of a snowboard from their parents, that changed Savannas life forever. Her brother had tied a circular sled onto his snowboard. Which quickly caught the eye of Ski Patrol. "They said I couldn't be out on the sled that they had taken me out on." From that moment forward Savanna enrolled in the Wintergreen Adaptive Sports program.

Her mom Anne, now the water sports coordinator, is amazed at the change in her daughter and other participants; including autistic children. "I've seen kids come so far with not looking you in the eye to laughing doing back flips off the back of canoes" Anne said.

The program offers scholarships to most of it's participants. For the upcoming boating season, roughly 90 percent will need financial assistance. "A lot of people can't afford to do some of these things and without the benefit of people giving their support and helping us, these people would not be able to be out there." says Anne.

If you would like to help, there is a 5k run Saturday morning starting from Devils Backbone Brewery. Registration is available until 8:30a Saturday morning. All the proceeds go directly into providing scholarships and maintaining the program at Wintergreen. You can also register by clicking here.
