Program Encourages Summer Reading Outside of Classroom

June 8, 2013

About 300 people showed up to the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library's Summer Reading Kickoff in downtown Charlottesville Saturday morning.

Part of Second Street was shut down for the event, where organizers set up a book sale and signed people up for the library's summer reading program, which takes place between June 10 and July 27.

The goal of the program is to keep kids and teens reading outside of the classroom.

"That's what the library wants to do, is make sure the kids read so that they don't forget everything they learned at school, and it keeps their brain sharp," said Krista Farrell, JRML's assistant director. "In the summer, they pick up new vocabulary, and then they also have reading lists from school, so the library can help them out with that."

The Gordon Avenue Branch of the library will have its own kickoff. The 19th-annual ice cream social is set for Monday, June 10, at 6:30 p.m.
