Virginia Adventures: Ziplining

May 1, 2013

There are adventures to be had all around us in Central Virginia and CBS19's Dan Schutte will be going North, East, South, and West to find them. Best of all, you only have to use one tank of gas to get to them. In the first of the this series, Dan goes North to Bear Mountain Adventures to take a trip through the canopy.

Bear Mountain Adventures is 63 miles North of Charlottesville, near Luray. Your day will start with safety training and safety gear, then a tractor will take you to the top of the mountain. Your goal: to zip line through the trees at around 35 miles an hour all the way back down.

"It's anywhere from 45 to 1:30 to come down." says Tony Higginbotham, owner of Bear Mountain Adventures. "Two guides with 8-10 people and most people love it."

At the top, your first zip line is a short one, designed to make sure you know what you are doing, and that you can pull yourself in if needs be.

Then the fun begins. There are 7 different lines in all, and each one ramps it up a little more.

Jaime Clark, whose family joined Dan on his way down the mountain said, "They get bigger and faster and longer which is awesome."

They certainly do. But there is a bit of an art to it. If you come in too slow, you will have to pull yourself the rest of the way to the platform.

However, if you come in too fast the landing is a little rough.

"When they tell you to brake, brake. Very important." said Clark

It takes some getting used to, but once you get it, Clark says, it's a blast.

"Very good, that was perfect."

Fortunately its easier than it looks, "8 years old and we've even had a woman that was 87 and she loved it." remarked Higginbotham.

In the year they've been open the folks at bear mountain have welcomed visitors from England, Hong Kong, even Australia
