If you have some free time on your hands this holiday season, a number of nonprofits are looking for you.

It's the busiest time of year for many local organizations in Central Virginia, and they want people to know there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer.

"Everything from wrapping gifts for the SPCA to visiting nursing homes. That's one that's really important. Maybe be a friendly visitor to someone who maybe doesn't have family nearby or could use help writing their Christmas cards, so that's always something to keep in mind," said Jessica Snyder, director of the United Way's Volunteer Center.

The United Way-Thomas Jefferson Area is flooded with phone calls from organizations asking for extra hands. So the group is now streamlining the process through an updated website.

"There are plenty of opportunities to volunteer around Christmas or New Year's," Snyder said. "But it's important for people to remember the need doesn't stop there. There are nonprofits all over Charlottesville and the surrounding counties that need volunteers every day of the year."
