Agnor-Hurt Elementary School held a "girls night out" Wednesday for students and their parents to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Title IX in Albemarle County.
Title IX, passed in 1972, gave women the opportunity to participate in high school and collegiate athletic activities.
During the event at Agnor-Hurt Elementary School, teachers encouraged students to participate in exercise activities to help them stay fit.
"The girls have the opportunity to really advance themselves. But one thing that's important is that they have to stay active, have to be physically fit, need to eat right and drink plenty of fluids and mainly water," said physical education teacher Gwen Hairston.
The event is also in part of raising awareness for heart disease since February is National Heart Month.
