October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Although 1 out of 8 women will develop breast cancer, according to the National Cancer Institute, when it is found early, the odds of beating breast cancer are 97%.
Dr. Sylvia Hendrix is a Radiation Oncologist at Martha Jefferson Hospital, and she came to the studio to explain how to treat breast cancer. Depending on the stage that the patient is identified with, treatment can include varying degrees of radiation therapy.
Early detection greatly affects how many options a patient has in terms of treatment, and can affect how much normal tissue surrounding the tumor can be saved.
