Doctors at Martha Jefferson Hospital are now getting instant access to accurate information about their patients thanks to a new electronic health care system.

CBS19's Cheryn Stone learned more about this new time-saving feature in this week's Martha Jefferson Healthwise.

At the Cardiovascular Associates of Charlottesville, all patient records are electronic. The electronic medical record starts immediately when a patients registers at the office.

"Anything that increases the doctor's time talking with the patient. I think it's a great thing minimizing the time you spend looking for info, comparing info, or confirming info," said Dr. Arun Prahash.

The new completely computerized records are a definite time-saver for doctors and great for patients who have an appointment. Plus, the new system is helpful during emergency transportation to the ER.

"Often times, when somebody is in great distress, they are not sure of their medical record, or we don't have access to their medical record. One of the best things that the electronic record has done for us is access," said Dr. Lee Litvinas.

With a patient's permission, doctors have up-to-date medical records of their patients at their fingertips. Allergies, medications, lab results, and previous test results are all available immediately.

The electronic records not only save time. Whether by avoiding repeating tests, or simply saving resources, the system also saves money.

The electronic records are safe and fast, and leave more time for patients and doctors to talk. And "time is life" in an emergency.
