Martha Jefferson Healthwise: Baby Basics

Jan. 15, 2014

If you're pregnant, you probably have a lot of questions and may be looking for more ways to learn about your new baby and your health. In this week's Martha Jefferson Healthwise report, CBS19's Stephanie Satchell has more on a new club aimed at helping expectant mothers.

In just a few weeks, The Starr Hill Health Center will be full with pregnant moms, all in attendance for the Baby Basics Mom's Club.

"Baby Basics is a group learning model for pregnant women and it's facilitated by health educators. Women can come bring a partner with them and drop in as often as they like," said Jacklene Martin, Director of Community Benefit, Martha Jefferson Hospital.

When moms come to the meeting, they'll get a free Baby Basics book and cover topics ranging from nutrition to preparing for delivery at the hospital.

"Outside of learning about the core topics, it's a great opportunity for women to bond for these mothers to become more comfortable with the healthcare environment and be better advocates for themselves. That's definitely something we hope to see come out of the club," said Martin.

Although, some local pregnant moms do get regular care throughout their pregnancy, healthcare providers say there's still a need for this resource.

"When you look at our community's most recent needs assessment, you see that pregnant women in the community are not accessing prenatal care as they should. This is not meant to replace that prenatal care, but it is a great opportunity to bring together women who maybe wouldn't go to a child birth class and give them that information," said Martin.

Information that could end up keeping you or your baby healthy.

Martha Jefferson will have a kick off meeting on January 28th at the Star Hill Health Center from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

No registration is necessary.

The Baby Basics Mom's Club is co-sponsored by the University of Virginia Health System and it will also have a Baby Basics Mom's Club beginning soon.
