Martha Jefferson Hospital has opened a brand new neuroscience center on Pantops. In this week's Martha Jefferson Healthwise report, CBS19’s Stephanie Satchell takes us inside the new facility located in the Outpatient Care Center.

The building may look the same on the outside, but it's recently changed on the inside. What was once a free standing emergency department at the Outpatient Care Center is now the new Neuroscience Center.

“What makes us a neuroscience center is beyond just merely providing a neurologist or neurosurgeon, we have programs that integrate the care between the providers,” said Alexander Grunsfeld, Director of Stroke & Neurocrititcal Care, Martha Jefferson Hospital.

Dr. Alexander Grunsfeld says patients can receive a wide range of services all under one roof.

“So if you have an appointment with a neurologist for instance but you also need and electroencephalogram or you need and MRI of your brain or you need some labs drawn, you come to one building and you get it all over there. This is particularly important for people that are somewhat debilitated and it's difficult for them to get around,” said Dr. Grunsfeld.

Doctors at the Neuroscience Center are typically treating patients who have suffered a stroke, have back or spine problems, and seizures.

They even have a gym dedicated to neurorehabilitation. Patients can use equipment aimed at helping with balance issues and teaching fall prevention.

“These are ways the therapist can work with a neurologist to make sure that people have problems with dizziness have their symptoms addressed and approved or they just simply have concerns that they might be at risk for a fall, they can get a full evaluation and help with that,” said Dr. Grunsfeld.

Dr. Grunsfeld says they're even putting measures in place to make sure they the Neuroscience Center is doing a good job.

“So, it may be measures of things that we need to do with every patient that comes in with some type of problem. The other kind of measures would be outcomes… how these patients are doing as a result of what we have done,” said Dr. Grunsfeld.

Whether it's care after a stroke or a seizure, Dr. Grunsfeld says they'll be able to do it all in one place at the Neuroscience Center.
