A specialty shop in Charlottesville is aiming to make life easier for breast cancer patients and survivors. In this week's Martha Jefferson Healthwise report we'll take a look inside the Something Special Shop at the hospital.
For women undergoing treatment for breast cancer, it can often mean physical changes like a mastectomy or losing your hair after chemotherapy.
Located just a few steps away from the Phillips cancer center, patients can find the Something Special Shop. It's a special boutique in the hospital geared toward women with breast cancer.
“It has been an additional service to these ladies to think they can park their car once and make several visits. They can see they're doctor. They can see me,” said Edna Wood, Something Special Shop, Martha Jefferson Hospital.
Edna Wood runs the shop and recently partnered with the hospital to bring women these services.
“Really what has meant the most to me is the many many ladies I have met. They have been an inspiration to me,” Wood.
Wood helps fit women with special bras, breast forms, wigs, and skin care after a mastectomy.
She says it means a great deal for the women to have the image they had before surgery.
“It's amazing and usually both of us have tears in our eyes and it's just an exciting time for them and for me to feel like I've been a part of this new person and to recover the image,” said Wood.
She says just picking up a few items on the rack that can make a big difference for a woman as she recovers from surgery and puts her life back in order.
The Something Special Shop is open Monday through Friday from 10:00am to 5:00pm and by appointment only on Saturday.
