Martha Jefferson Healthwise: e-Cards

Oct. 30, 2013

If you've ever stayed at the hospital, you may have received balloons, flowers and traditional cards. Now Martha Jefferson Hospital is giving people an opportunity to send patients electronic or "e-cards" from anywhere in the world.

If your friend or family member is a patient at Martha Jefferson Hospital, you can now send them an e-card with the click of a mouse.

Just take a quick visit to Martha Jefferson's website, click on "patient information" then "e-cards."

It's an option that the director of guest services says is faster and more convenient.

"The length of stay at the hospital is so short about 3.2 days so the chance of getting a card in and getting it delivered before the patient goes home is next to impossible to do," said Martha Hunter, Director of Guest Services, Martha Jefferson Hospital.

From the time the message comes in to the time it's printed onto a card, this process is quick.

"This is an opportunity where you go online, send that message and it's delivered the same day. It gets hand delivered to the patient and they just appreciate it so much," said Hunter.

Bob Gross' wife has been in ICU at Martha Jefferson Hospital for two weeks. She's one of the first patients to receive an e-card through the new program.

"As she hears the names, she's very delighted to hear from a large array of folks and that's been helpful. It helps to keep up the spirits," said Bob Gross, Husband of MJH Patient.

Hunter says keeping the spirits up is important when a patient is trying to recover.

"There are people out there that are sending you're their good wishes and their prayers and their good thoughts. It really does help you heal fast if you know that there are people out there pulling for," said Hunter.

So, if you can't make it to the hospital for a visit, you can still take the time to send an e-card. Just a few minutes of your time will make all the difference to a patient reading your well wishes.

The e-card program is free and is available from 8:00am to 5:00pm everyday.
