Out with the old and in with the new. The brand new Afton Family Medicine building on Rockfish Valley Highway is up and running.

With this new facility comes more space.

“It's just easier for patients to get in and out," said Dr. Stephen Schmitz. "It's more usable space, more exam rooms and we can be more efficient and keep things moving for patients."

There are now three additional exams rooms for treatment, wider hallways to get around and a new décor and bright paint, all of which give the place a more modern feel.

“I think this is much more representative of Martha Jefferson's new hospital. It's more consistent with that,” said Dr. Charles Cole.

Not only are there big changes with space on the inside, patients will notice a significant difference out front.

“Parking is great. Getting in is a lot easier. The other [building] was on a hill so you sort of floored it when you were leaving,” said patient Dale Anderson.

While the new space is an upgrade from the previous location, some patients say they will miss the 50-year-old building located just down the road. For many it's a place with lots of memories.

However, Doctors Schmitz and Cole say they provided great care before and know this new building will allow them to do even more.
