From what's on your plate to the kinds of socks you wear, Martha Jefferson Hospital health officials want to give people with diabetes a chance to learn as much as they can about their health.

“Diabetes is a serious disease. It's important for people who have it to know everything they can about it because they are the ones that manage it on a day-to-day basis," said Barbara Martin, a certified diabetes educator. "They can't do that successfully unless they have a very good understanding of it."

In the one-day course, patients learn how food impacts diabetes, the importance of exercise, how to track their blood sugar levels on a chart and more. They will also learn that keeping diabetes in check isn't only about blood sugar.

“It's important for people with diabetes to have their eyes checked every year and to keep a close watch on their feet. If any problems develop to address those issues right then and there,” Martin explained.

Not only will the class help patients learn how to improve their health, ti will also give participants a chance to meet other people going through the same thing.

While diabetes is a serious condition, health officials say with the right information and care patients can successfully manage their diabetes.

The diabetes education class will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 13 from 9am to 9pm. If you would like to sign up, call the Martha Jefferson Health Connection line at (434) 654-7009.
