Healthwise: Hospital Art Tours

April 11, 2011

You might normally look for artwork at a gallery, but now everyone has a chance to take in the latest collection during a new art tour at Martha Jefferson Hospital.

“There's sculptures, oil paintings, photography, fabric and collages. There's quite a lot of diversity, and in every place you look there will be something a little different than where you just looked before,” said Nancy Cranwell, docent for gallery.

Along the tour guests will notice the artwork isn't just reserved for the walls; creative light fixtures hang from the ceilings, and when you step outside you can see one of the most popular sculptures at the hospital.

“I don't think a lot of people know or relate art to hospitals and now it's becoming a trend,” said Director of Guest Services Martha Hunter.

Not only does the latest trend brighten the scenery, but health officials say art also has healing powers.

“For anyone coming to the hospital, I think it's an uplifting experience. What you hear or what you see makes a difference. Much of the art is calming and soothing and joyful,” said Cranwell.

Not only will guests and patients get to check out the 700-piece collection while learning about the local artwork, they'll also have a chance to put their mind at ease.

“It gives you something else to focus on when you're going through a stressful and difficult time. It can take you to another place and transcend you to a happy place," said Cranwell.

Art tours are offered every Tuesday at 10 a.m. and every Thursday at 1:30 p.m. To register for a slot, call Health Connection at 434-654-7009.
