Community Counts gives you a chance to learn more about the people and the organizations that have a positive impact on our community. This week we feature Help Save The Next Girl.
Gil Harrington, mother of murdered Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington, joined CBS19's Bo Sykes to talk more about the campaign.
The Harringtons launched Help Save The Next Girl in October 2011, two year after their daughter's disappearance from outside a Metallica concert at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville.
"When Morgan was still in the missing phase we said we never wanted another family to go through this kind of anguish," Gil explained. "And we do want to save the next girl. We want to prevent further violence against young people."
The campaign was created to bring awareness to the vulnerability of young women while also empowering them to make the best choices for their own safety, and the safety of their friends.
The website was designed to become a central point of information for the families of other victims nationwide, providing them with action steps, templates and resources to use in their own specific cases.
"It's too late for Morgan," her mother told CBS19. "Our daughter is dead, but when you experience this kind of tragedy part of the way you deal with or transcend the pain is to make something good from it."
The site includes links to the Virginia State Police tip line and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
