Community Counts gives you a chance to learn more about the people and the organizations that have a positive impact on our community. This week we feature the African-American Teaching Fellows.
Scott Guggenheimer joined CBS19's Bo Sykes to talk more about the organization, which serves the Charlottesville and Albemarle County school systems.
The group was formed in 2004 after a group of local citizens recognized that the recruitment and retention of African American teachers in local schools is an essential step in improving the academic achievement levels of black children in the community.
The goals of the AATF program are:
- Recruit, develop, and support qualified African Americans seeking a teaching career who will commit to teach in the Charlottesville or Albemarle County public schools
- Provide professional advisement and mentoring opportunities that extend beyond the regular college and licensure programs
- Instill a sense of mission, service and leadership in the African American Teaching Fellows
