Rusted Root is in town for a performance at the Jefferson. The band's eclectic world music style draws influences from all over the globe. Their musical genre can't be pin-pointed and sometimes, neither can their lyrics.
One of the band's most highly contested lyrics lies in their most popular song: "Send Me on My Way."
While many in our studios and across the internet have offered up guesses as to what the lyrics could be ("beebeedesaybeebeedeyum" "that's what they say about the young") group member Liz Berlin puts them all to rest.
"It's gibberish", said Berlin. "It''s the same gibberish every time but it's not real words." Even members of Rusted Root have their own humorous take on the song. The band's base player jokes that it's a baseball reference: "nobody safe nobody on".
Whether you can understand the lyrics doesn't seem to matter to fans. Everyone can find meaning in the music.
"You look out in the crowd and you'll see anyone from grandmas to middle aged moms and dads to college kids and now little nine year olds it really seems to span across all ages and genres," said Berlin."I definitely love to see the transformation of the crowd from the time the show starts as we take them through the performance how the vibe evolves in the room. It's really fun to watch and an honor to be a part of actually."
The group is working on a new album and hoping to take their unique sound global. They hope to embark on a world tour, after touring the states for the past 20 years.
