A popular Charlottesville dinner spot is now a place to find a new type of live music where local musicians are hitting all the right notes.

Every Monday night, The Local in Belmont transforms into a musician's haven. Brian Caputo, with the Charlottesville Songwriter Circle, describes the event as a showcase for songwriters.

"We are hosting a songwriter night where songwriters from all over Charlottesville can come showcase the new material they've written," he explained.

The song goes from the writer's head to a piece of paper and moments later it's handed off to the house band and performed in front of a room full of people.

The band never sees the music beforehand and just follows along, creating a very organic sound.

"The house band learns the song on the spot and we come up with a spontaneous arrangement on the spot," said musician Jesse Harper.

For local artists like Nikki Chambless, it's a place to perform original songs.

"As a musician I think it's really important to be able to be a part of a community of musicians," she said.

"I didn't know song writers and I wanted to get to know other people and share ideas," said Harper who added that the weekly event creates a musical community.

With more than 100 people now on the list, the Charlottesville Songwriter Circle is gaining tons of interest, packing The Local with plenty of talent and support.

The Songwriter Circle happens every Monday night at the Local from 8:30 to 11pm. There is no cover charge.
