The Folds of Honor Foundation provides scholarships and money to families of fallen or disabled military men and women, making sure the spouses and children of service members have support.

And a local golf course is pitching in, literally.

"[It's] one of the best ways that we [people] who are no longer in the service, or those individuals that have never been in the service, can give back to those people that have sacrificed so much for us," said Daryl Daughtrey, Director of Golf at the Rivanna Golf Club.

Golfers are invited out to hit long drives and sink birdie putts to honor the driving force behind our nation's freedom. The four-player, captain's choice event begins with a shotgun start at 9am on Saturday, September 11.

"The heroes are our service men and women. They allow us to do everything we have here, so everything they do is significant for our benefit," said Daughtrey.

Daughtrey spends most of his time on the link these days, but years ago, he spent time serving in the Air Force.

"I'm a Veteran. My father was a Veteran. I know a lot of Vets and a lot of the people that play here are Vets. It's something special I think to all of us that have served," he said.

Patriot Golf Day events, like the one at the Rivanna Golf Club, have raised more than $5 million in the last three years, and Daughtrey is hoping to add to that total.

The entry fee for the Rivanna Golf Club event is $60 per player and includes a round of golf (with cart), range balls and refreshments following play. Entry forms can be found in area golf pro shops and the Charlottesville Golf Center. Anyone interested in participating can call the Rivanna Golf Club at 434-589-3730.
