Hailey's Heroes: Joshua Bare

May 28, 2009

Hope Community Center is the vision of Dr. Harold Bare. The building has been in its current location, on 11th Street NW in Charlottesville, since 1998. The Center has now been turned over to Harold's son, Joshua, who hopes to expand his father's vision. His work at the Center make him this week's Hailey's Hero.

After returning from South America, Joshua Bare started working for the Hope Community Center.

"Its been really exciting," said Bare. "In 2004 I had just moved back [from South America] and I came and walked through this neighborhood. We had just been established and people didn't know who we were and why we were really wanting to be here."

Since that time Hope has evolved. People now recognize the Center as an outreach for people of all ages and ethnicities. The Center serves warm breakfast to people in need. They have formed a soccer league and offer an after-school program for kids in the community.

"It's people who are in desperate need that I became passionate about," said Bare.

Bare says each new program elicits community change, and changing the community is just what he plans to do. Bare is planning a summer series called "Meet your Neighbor." The neighbor event is an 11 week series lasting throughout the summer. "We will be going into 11 communities throughout the next 11 weeks, with the hope of helping those communities get to know one another and learn to help each other," said Bare.
